"Every great Temple has a story. Some are built by kings and kingdoms, while others are built by the unwavering faith, sacrifice and collective devotion of ordinary people. The story of Purbanchal Kalibari belongs to the latter."
The history of Purbanchal Kalibari Samity is a remarkable journey of faith, perseverance and community spirit—a story that began with a dream cherished by a handful of devoted families of Bengali origin, who, despite being hundreds of kilometres away from their ancestral homeland, remained deeply rooted in their religious traditions, cultural heritage and devotion to Maa Kali.
In the early 1970s, New Ashok Nagar was still a developing colony on the eastern outskirts of Delhi. The roads were few, civic amenities were limited, and the neighbourhood was only beginning to take shape. As more Bengali families made New Ashok Nagar their home, there grew an earnest desire to establish a sacred place where they could worship together, celebrate their festivals and preserve their cherished traditions for future generations.
The dream was simple, yet profound.
It was not merely to construct a Temple.
It was to build a spiritual home—a place where the sound of the dhak during Durga Puja, the fragrance of dhuno during evening arati, the chanting of sacred mantras and the blessings of Maa Kali would forever remain a part of community life.
A small group of visionary and dedicated members of the Bengali community came together with this noble objective. Meetings were held, ideas were exchanged and responsibilities were shared. Every challenge was met with determination and every success strengthened the resolve to transform the dream into reality.
After years of tireless efforts, the first major milestone was achieved with the acquisition of land in 1976. This was followed by the formal registration of Purbanchal Kalibari Samity in 1978, providing a firm organisational foundation for the sacred mission that lay ahead.
Yet, the greatest challenge still remained.
The Temple itself had to be built.
There were no wealthy benefactors waiting to finance the project. There were no grand endowments or institutional grants. What existed instead was something far more powerful—the unwavering faith and collective determination of an entire community.
The Temple rose slowly...
Brick by brick.
Stone by stone.
Offering by offering.
Every family contributed according to its means. Some donated money, some contributed bricks, cement and construction materials, while many offered their labour after completing long hours of work. Weekends became days of Shramdaan (voluntary service). Men, women and young volunteers worked side by side, carrying materials, clearing the site and watching with immense pride as the walls of their long-awaited Temple gradually rose from the ground.
Every brick laid was an act of devotion.
Every pillar erected was a symbol of faith.
Every wall that stood reflected the sacrifices of countless known and unknown devotees whose only desire was to create a permanent abode for the Divine Mother.
Then came the day for which the entire community had prayed.
15th March 1981 will forever remain a red-letter day in the history of Purbanchal Kalibari Samity and in the collective memory of the residents of New Ashok Nagar and the adjoining areas.
On this sacred and historic day, amidst the chanting of Vedic hymns, the blowing of conch shells and the heartfelt prayers of hundreds of devotees, the Temple was formally inaugurated with the Pran Pratishtha (consecration) of the sacred idol of Maa Kali.
It was not merely the inauguration of a Temple.
It was the fulfilment of a dream.
For the Bengali community, it marked the beginning of a new chapter—a permanent spiritual home where generations would gather in prayer, celebrate festivals, seek blessings and preserve the rich cultural traditions of Bengal.
The inauguration of Purbanchal Kalibari was a landmark event of immense historical significance, for it was the first Kalibari to be established in this part of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). It soon became a beacon of faith and an enduring symbol of Bengali religious and cultural identity for the rapidly growing communities of East Delhi and the adjoining NCR.
Inspired by the overwhelming response and the growing strength of the community, the Samity took another historic step later that very year.
In 1981, Purbanchal Kalibari organised its first Sri Sri Durga Puja.
Though modest in its beginning, it was rich in devotion and community participation. The rhythmic beats of the dhak, the sacred chants of the priests, the fragrance of incense and the joyous gathering of devotees transformed the occasion into a memorable celebration that laid the foundation for a tradition which has continued uninterrupted for over four decades.
With each passing year, the Temple continued to grow—not only in physical form but also in its role within the community.
Daily worship, Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Kojagori Lakshmi Puja, Saraswati Puja, Shivaratri, Janmashtami and numerous other religious observances became an integral part of its calendar. Alongside these, the Samity expanded its activities to include charitable healthcare through its weekly dispensary, medical camps, educational initiatives, cultural programmes, relief work and various social welfare activities, guided by the timeless Indian ideal of "Service to Humanity is Service to God."
Today, Purbanchal Kalibari stands as much more than a Temple.
It is a sanctuary of faith.
A custodian of Bengali culture and traditions.
A centre of community service.
A place where children discover their heritage, youth reconnect with their roots, elders find companionship and every devotee experiences a sense of belonging.
The year 2026 marks another glorious chapter in this extraordinary journey as Purbanchal Kalibari celebrates the Sapphire Jubilee – 45 Glorious Years of Durga Puja (1981–2026).
This historic milestone is a tribute to the vision of our founders, the dedication of successive office bearers, the selfless service of countless volunteers and the unwavering faith of thousands of devotees who transformed a modest dream into one of Delhi's most respected Bengali religious and cultural institutions.
As we honour our past with gratitude, we also look towards the future with renewed hope and determination. Guided by the same spirit that laid the first brick of this Temple, the Samity continues to pursue its cherished dream of establishing a Satsanga Bhaban-cum-Dharmashala, ensuring that Purbanchal Kalibari remains a vibrant centre of spirituality, culture, education and community service for generations to come.
The story of Purbanchal Kalibari is still being written.
It lives in every lamp lit before Maa Kali, every hymn sung in devotion, every act of selfless service, every volunteer's effort and every devotee who walks through its sacred gates.
For this Temple was never built merely with bricks and mortar.
It was built with faith.
It was built with sacrifice.
It was built with love.
And above all, it was built by a community united in its devotion to the Divine Mother.

স্বপ্ন থেকে সিদ্ধিলাভের অভিযাত্রা
ইতিহাস কেবল রাজা-রাজড়া, সাম্রাজ্য কিংবা যুদ্ধজয়ের কাহিনি নয়; ইতিহাস রচিত হয় মানুষের বিশ্বাস, আত্মত্যাগ, স্বপ্ন এবং সম্মিলিত সাধনার মধ্য দিয়েও। পূর্বাঞ্চল কালীবাড়ির ইতিহাস তেমনই এক ইতিহাস—একটি মন্দিরের, একটি সমাজের এবং এক অবিনশ্বর ঐতিহ্যের ইতিহাস।
এটি কেবল একটি মন্দির নির্মাণের কাহিনি নয়; এটি একটি স্বপ্নের বাস্তবায়নের ইতিহাস। এটি এমন একদল নিষ্ঠাবান মানুষের ইতিহাস, যাঁরা মাতৃভূমি থেকে বহু শত কিলোমিটার দূরে বসবাস করেও তাঁদের ধর্মীয় বিশ্বাস, সাংস্কৃতিক পরিচয় এবং শিকড়কে কখনও বিস্মৃত হননি। এটি এমন এক সমাজের ইতিহাস, যারা সম্মিলিত প্রয়াস, আত্মনিবেদন এবং অকৃত্রিম ভক্তির মাধ্যমে গড়ে তুলেছিলেন মা কালীর এক চিরন্তন আবাস।
পূর্বাঞ্চল কালীবাড়ি সমিতির ইতিহাস এক অনন্য আখ্যান—অদম্য বিশ্বাস, অক্লান্ত অধ্যবসায় এবং একতার শক্তিতে গড়ে ওঠা এক পবিত্র অভিযাত্রার ইতিহাস। এই অভিযাত্রার সূচনা হয়েছিল দিল্লিতে বসবাসকারী কয়েকটি বাঙালি পরিবারের এক আন্তরিক স্বপ্ন থেকে। মাতৃভূমি থেকে বহু শত কিলোমিটার দূরে বসবাস করলেও তাঁদের হৃদয় ছিল চিরকাল বাংলার ধর্মীয় ঐতিহ্য, সংস্কৃতি এবং সর্বোপরি মা কালীর অগাধ ভক্তিতে নিবেদিত।
সত্তরের দশকের গোড়ার দিকে, বর্তমানের ব্যস্ত জনপদ নিউ অশোক নগর তখনও ছিল এক নবগঠিত আবাসন এলাকা। কাঁচা রাস্তা, সীমিত নাগরিক পরিকাঠামো এবং ধীরে ধীরে গড়ে ওঠা জনবসতি—এই ছিল সেই সময়ের চিত্র। সেই সময় বহু বাঙালি পরিবার এই অঞ্চলে বসবাস শুরু করেন। নতুন জীবনের সংগ্রামের মধ্যেও তাঁদের মনে একটাই আকাঙ্ক্ষা ক্রমশ প্রবল হয়ে ওঠে—এমন একটি পবিত্র স্থান গড়ে তোলা, যেখানে তাঁরা একত্রিত হয়ে মা কালীর আরাধনা করতে পারবেন, দুর্গাপূজা, কালীপূজা ও অন্যান্য ধর্মীয় উৎসব পালন করতে পারবেন এবং আগামী প্রজন্মের হাতে তুলে দিতে পারবেন বাংলার সমৃদ্ধ ধর্মীয় ও সাংস্কৃতিক ঐতিহ্য।
স্বপ্নটি ছিল অত্যন্ত সরল, অথচ গভীর।
এটি কেবল একটি মন্দির নির্মাণের স্বপ্ন ছিল না।
এটি ছিল একটি আধ্যাত্মিক আশ্রয় গড়ে তোলার স্বপ্ন—যেখানে শরতের আকাশে ঢাকের বাদ্য ধ্বনিত হবে, সন্ধ্যার আরতিতে ধুনোর সুবাসে ভরে উঠবে চারদিক, বৈদিক মন্ত্রোচ্চারণে মুখরিত হবে পরিবেশ এবং মা কালীর অশেষ আশীর্বাদে আলোকিত হবে সমাজজীবন।
এই মহান উদ্দেশ্যকে সামনে রেখে কয়েকজন দূরদর্শী ও নিবেদিতপ্রাণ বাঙালি একত্রিত হলেন। ছোট ছোট বৈঠকে আলোচনার মাধ্যমে পরিকল্পনা তৈরি হতে লাগল। দায়িত্ব ভাগ করে নেওয়া হলো। প্রতিটি প্রতিবন্ধকতাকে দৃঢ়তার সঙ্গে অতিক্রম করা হলো এবং প্রতিটি ছোট সাফল্য সেই স্বপ্নকে আরও বাস্তবের কাছাকাছি নিয়ে এল।
বহু বছরের নিরলস প্রচেষ্টার পর ১৯৭৬ সালে মন্দির নির্মাণের জন্য জমি ক্রয় করা সম্ভব হয়। এই ঘটনা ছিল এক ঐতিহাসিক মাইলফলক। এরপর ১৯৭৮ সালে আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে পূর্বাঞ্চল কালীবাড়ি সমিতি নিবন্ধিত হয়, যার মাধ্যমে এই মহৎ উদ্যোগ একটি সুসংগঠিত ভিত্তি লাভ করে।
তবু সবচেয়ে বড় কাজটি তখনও বাকি ছিল।
মন্দির নির্মাণ।
কোনো ধনী পৃষ্ঠপোষকের বিশাল অনুদান ছিল না। কোনো বৃহৎ আর্থিক সহায়তাও ছিল না। ছিল শুধুই মানুষের অগাধ বিশ্বাস, আন্তরিকতা এবং সম্মিলিত প্রয়াস।
ধীরে ধীরে মাথা তুলে দাঁড়াতে শুরু করল মন্দির।
মানুষের হাতে হাতে।
শ্রমে শ্রমে।
ত্যাগে ত্যাগে।
বিশ্বাসে বিশ্বাসে।
প্রার্থনায় প্রার্থনায়।
প্রত্যেক পরিবার তাদের সামর্থ্য অনুযায়ী সহযোগিতার হাত বাড়িয়ে দিল। কেউ আর্থিক সাহায্য করলেন, কেউ ইট, বালি, সিমেন্ট কিংবা নির্মাণ সামগ্রী দান করলেন। আবার অনেকে দিনের পর দিন নিজের শ্রম উৎসর্গ করলেন। ছুটির দিনগুলি পরিণত হলো শ্রমদানের দিনে। নারী-পুরুষ, যুবক-যুবতী সকলেই কাঁধে কাঁধ মিলিয়ে নির্মাণকাজে অংশ নিলেন। তাঁদের চোখের সামনে ধীরে ধীরে রূপ নিতে লাগল বহু প্রতীক্ষিত সেই পবিত্র মন্দির।
আজও মনে হয়, এই মন্দিরের প্রতিটি ইট যেন একটি প্রার্থনা, প্রতিটি স্তম্ভ একটি অটল বিশ্বাস, আর প্রতিটি প্রাচীর নীরবে বহন করে চলেছে সেইসব মানুষের শ্রম, ত্যাগ, নিষ্ঠা ও সাধনার ইতিহাস, যাঁদের অক্লান্ত প্রয়াসে গড়ে উঠেছিল মা কালীর এই পবিত্র আবাস।
অবশেষে এল সেই মাহেন্দ্রক্ষণ, যার জন্য গোটা সম্প্রদায় অধীর আগ্রহে অপেক্ষা করছিল।
১৫ই মার্চ, ১৯৮১—এই দিনটি চিরকাল পূর্বাঞ্চল কালীবাড়ি সমিতি-র ইতিহাসে এবং নিউ অশোক নগর ও সংলগ্ন অঞ্চলের মানুষের স্মৃতিতে এক স্বর্ণাক্ষরে লেখা দিন হয়ে থাকবে।
এই শুভ ও ঐতিহাসিক দিনে বৈদিক মন্ত্রোচ্চারণ, শঙ্খধ্বনি এবং শত শত ভক্তের উপস্থিতিতে মা কালীর বিগ্রহের প্রাণপ্রতিষ্ঠার মধ্য দিয়ে পূর্বাঞ্চল কালীবাড়ির আনুষ্ঠানিক উদ্বোধন সম্পন্ন হয়।
এটি ছিল না কেবল একটি মন্দিরের উদ্বোধন।
এটি ছিল বহু বছরের স্বপ্ন, সাধনা ও আত্মত্যাগের পরিপূর্ণ বাস্তবায়ন।
দিল্লিতে বসবাসকারী বাঙালি সমাজের কাছে এটি ছিল এক নতুন যুগের সূচনা—একটি স্থায়ী আধ্যাত্মিক কেন্দ্র, যেখানে প্রজন্মের পর প্রজন্ম মা কালীর আশীর্বাদ লাভ করবে, ধর্মীয় অনুষ্ঠান পালন করবে এবং বাংলার ঐতিহ্যকে বুকে ধারণ করে এগিয়ে চলবে।
ঐতিহাসিক দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকেও এই ঘটনাটি ছিল অত্যন্ত তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ। পূর্বাঞ্চল কালীবাড়িই ছিল দিল্লির এই অংশ এবং জাতীয় রাজধানী অঞ্চলের (এনসিআর) এই অঞ্চলে প্রতিষ্ঠিত প্রথম কালীবাড়ি।
এই মন্দির প্রতিষ্ঠার মাধ্যমে শুধু একটি উপাসনালয়েরই জন্ম হয়নি; জন্ম নিয়েছিল একটি সাংস্কৃতিক কেন্দ্র, একটি সামাজিক প্রতিষ্ঠান এবং এক অবিচ্ছেদ্য সম্প্রদায়ের মিলনক্ষেত্র।
পরবর্তীকালে, ১৯৮১ সালেই, পূর্বাঞ্চল কালীবাড়িতে প্রথমবারের মতো শ্রীশ্রী দুর্গাপূজা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। সেই বিনম্র সূচনা আজ এক গৌরবময় ঐতিহ্যে পরিণত হয়েছে, যার ধারাবাহিকতা আজ নীলা জয়ন্তী—শ্রীশ্রী দুর্গাপূজার ৪৫ গৌরবময় বর্ষ (১৯৮১–২০২৬) উদ্যাপনের মধ্য দিয়ে এক ঐতিহাসিক উচ্চতায় পৌঁছেছে।
পূজার পাশাপাশি সমাজের প্রতি দায়বদ্ধতাকেও সমান গুরুত্ব দিয়ে পূর্বাঞ্চল কালীবাড়ি সমিতি ভারতীয় চিরন্তন আদর্শ ‘শিবজ্ঞানে জীবসেবা’-কে আপন আদর্শ হিসেবে গ্রহণ করেছে। সমিতির দৃঢ় বিশ্বাস—ঈশ্বরের আরাধনার প্রকৃত পরিপূর্ণতা মানুষের সেবার মধ্যেই নিহিত। সেই আদর্শকে সামনে রেখেই সাপ্তাহিক দাতব্য চিকিৎসালয়, স্বাস্থ্য শিবির, ত্রাণসেবা, শিক্ষা ও সাংস্কৃতিক কার্যক্রম এবং বিভিন্ন সমাজকল্যাণমূলক উদ্যোগ আজও সমান নিষ্ঠা ও আন্তরিকতার সঙ্গে পরিচালিত হয়ে আসছে।
আজ পূর্বাঞ্চল কালীবাড়ি কেবল একটি মন্দির নয়; এটি বিশ্বাসের এক পবিত্র তীর্থ, বাংলার সংস্কৃতির এক জীবন্ত ধারক এবং সমাজসেবার এক নিবেদিত প্রতিষ্ঠান। অতীতের গৌরবকে ধারণ করে, বর্তমানের দায়িত্ব পালন করে এবং ভবিষ্যতের স্বপ্নকে বুকে নিয়ে পূর্বাঞ্চল কালীবাড়ি আজও এগিয়ে চলেছে—একই বিশ্বাস, একই নিষ্ঠা এবং একই আত্মনিবেদনের আলোয়।
